Download is how fast data reaches you — it sets how quickly pages load and whether video plays without buffering. Upload matters for video calls, backups and sending large files; on most UK connections it is far lower than download.

Latency is the round trip to this server in milliseconds. Under 20 ms is excellent, over 100 ms will feel sluggish in games and calls. Jitter is how much that round trip varies. High jitter breaks up voice and video even when the speed looks fine.

This measures the line between your device and this server. Wi‑Fi, an old router or a busy household will all pull the number down before your broadband is at fault — repeat the test on a cable if the result looks wrong.
